Philanthropy is a major part of Greek Life here on Western Illinois’ campus. Many Greek’s attend different events to show support for the cause and for the chapter that is hosting the event. Every fraternity and sorority on campus hosts philanthropy events throughout the year. From Smokin’ Hog to Walk for Wishes, these events raise a lot money.
So why do Greek’s do philanthropies? Just ask them, they won’t hesitate when it comes to telling their personal experiences. Every year Chi Omega raises money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and for Ashley Hillenburg it hits home, “Make-A-Wish is a part of my home and my family. It is the reason I am who I am today.” Seeing the impact of
philanthropies on the members of the Greek community opens people’s eyes to the deeper meaning of being Greek.
This past weekend Delta Zeta hosted their annual Turtle Tug, where proceeds went to Painted Turtle Camp. At this event participants create teams to play tug-of-war in a jello pit. Delta Zeta Philanthropy Chair Jessica Dudek put together this successful event. “Holding these events means a lot to me when I realize how much it can change one family’s lives by us coming together as a community to raise awareness for those with speech and hearing disabilities… there’s nothing more rewarding than knowing you did something so small, that it can make such a big difference,” said Dudek.
Philanthropies on Western’s campus will continue to bring joy to the hearts of the men and women in the Greek community. The impact it has on an individual or a family shows what a fraternity man or sorority women can do to give back to he cause. Seeing the smiles on children’s faces, and the tears of joy from the families, is only one of the reasons why Greeks members continue to plan and participate in philanthropic events. It’s something every Greek member takes to
heart.
